Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the site that is now the City of Canton originally lay in the heart of the Cherokee Nation. A large number of the members of the Cherokee Nation moved west, but the majority were forced to leave by federal troops in 1838 on what is known today as the "Trail of Tears."
Originally known as Etowah, the city's name was changed to Canton after the Chinese city of Guangzhou, which roughly translated in English to Canton. Canton was chosen as a name by the citizens due to their aspirations of creating a silk industry hub here in the U.S. Though those aspirations never materialized, Canton did become a successful manufacturing community and was famous for the "Canton Denim" produced by the Canton Cotton Mills that eventually closed in 1979.
The Historic Canton Theatre on Main Street features plays and other special entertainment events throughout the year. In partnership with the Metro Atlanta YMCA, the city constructed an $8 million community center that includes an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, wellness center, aerobics studio, childcare facilities and the Cherokee Sports Hall of Fame. The City of Canton has a population of 22,958.
