In 1858, some of the land in the former Cherokee Nation north of the Chattahoochee was joined into a county called Milton County. In the 1930's, during the Great Depression, Milton County was dissolved and all its land was absorbed into Fulton County.
In 1981, a group of Georgia Institute of Technology graduates bought 1,700 acres of woods and farm land in north Fulton County (near McGinnis Ferry and Medlock Bridge roads) for a high-tech office park. Spotting Johns Creek tributary on a map, they named their mixed-use, master-planned community Technology Park/Johns Creek. Over the years, the area grew to become the home of 200 companies - many of them Fortune 500 firms. In fact, John's Creek contains the 5th largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, including Exide Technologies (one of the world's largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries) and CIBA Vision ( a world leader in the research, development and manufacturing of contact lenses and lens care products).
In 2000, a legislative campaign was started to incorporate the Johns Creek community. House Bill 1321 was signed by Gov. Sonny Perdue in March of 2006 and approved by a voter referendum in July of that same year. The City of Johns Creek becoming official on December 1, 2006.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 76,728 people live in the City of Johns Creek. It is the tenth-largest municipality in Georgia and its wealthiest city. Johns Creek is the home of metro Atlanta's only part-time, fully professional symphony orchestra, the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra. Johns Creek's public schools consistently place among the top in the nation. In 2007, John's Creek was named "One of America's Top 25 Places to Live and Go to School" by RelocateAmerica.
