Dunwoody, Georgia

Dunwoody, Georgia is a northern suburb of Atlanta, Georgia and located in DeKalb County, Georgia. While Dunwoody officially became a city on December 1, 2008, the area it encompasses has been known as Dunwoody for over 100 years.

The Dunwoody area was first settled in the early 1830's. It is named for Major Charles Dunwody (1828-1905). The extra "o" in the name "Dunwoody" as we know it today was added due to incorrect spelling on a banking note. The Spruill family owned a large part of the DeKalb County portion of Dunwoody. The Spruill Historic Home and Gallery located on Ashford-Dunwoody Road was their original homesite. Mrs. Ethel Spruill and Miss Onnie Mae Spruill donated the Spruell homplace and 5 additional acres to DeKalb County and Dunwoody.

The first church, which also served as a private school, The Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, established in 1829, was the first church in Dunwoody, Georgia. It also served as a private school. Located at the intersection of Roberts Dr. and Spalding Dr, it still serves as an active church today. It is also has one of the city's oldest cemeteries, where many of the founding fathers of Dunwoody are buried.

Today, Dunwoody, Georgia boasts a population of over 46,000 residents. However, that number blooms daily as over 100,000 commute for work at the many fortune 500 companied which call Dunwoody home. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has its headquarters in the Perimeter Center and in Dunwoody. In 2010 the newspaper relocated its headquarters from Downtown Atlanta, Georgia to leased offices in the Perimeter Center for financial reasons. Dunwoody, Georgia is also home of the American corporate offices of InterContinental Hotels Group and Porsche Cars North America, Inc.
