Johns Creek, Georgia

In 1858, a portion of the land lying just north of the Chattahoochee River that made up the former Cherokee Nation was formed into new county known Milton County. In the 1930’s, Milton County was dissolved due to the economic struggles it faced as a result of the Great Depression. At that time, Fulton County absorbed all of what was known as Milton County.

In 1981, a group of Georgia Tech graduates purchased 1,700 acres of woods and farm land in north Fulton County (near the intersection of Medlock Bridge and McGinnis Ferry roads) for the development technology office park. They chose to name their master-planned, mixed-use development Technology Park/Johns Creek after the Johns Creek Tributary that ran nearby. Over the years, the area grew to become the home of more than 200 companies. In fact, John’s Creek contains the 5th largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, including Exide Technologies (one of the world’s largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries) and CIBA Vision (a world leader in the research, development and manufacturing of contact lenses and lens care products).

The citizens of the area began a legislative campaign began in 2000 in hopes of the City of Johns Creek. House Bill 1321 was introduced to the Georgia Legislature in 2006 and approved by a voter referendum in July of that same year. On December 1, 2006, the area became officially known as the City of Johns Creek.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 76,728 people live in the City of Johns Creek. It is the tenth-largest municipality in Georgia and its wealthiest city. Johns Creek is the home of metro Atlanta’s only part-time, fully professional symphony orchestra, the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra. Johns Creek’s public schools consistently place among the top in the nation. In 2007, John’s Creek was named “One of America’s Top 25 Places to Live and Go to School” by RelocateAmerica.
