The City of Roswell was founded by Roswell King who came from St. Simons Island, GA in 1836. Roswell officially became a city on February 16, 1854.
Roswell is the third largest city in Fulton County and the eighth largest in the state of Georgia, with a population of over 88,000 residents. Roswell is known throughout the state for its impressive park system. It has 890.38 acres of parkland, which equals 10.5 acres per 1,000 residents. This exceeds the national recommendation of 7 acres per 1,000 residents. The City of Roswell has one of the lowest crime rates in the state and is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the entire Southeast. In 2006, Roswell was named the 18th safest city in the United States and the safest city in Georgia.
Roswell is distinctive because of its small businesses, which predominate Roswell's historic downtown. The City of Roswell owns three historic homes—Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Archibald Smith Plantation—located in the heart of the city open to the public for special events and exhibits. The City has been chosen twice by "Atlanta Magazine" as the best place to live in the Metro-Atlanta area and the Georgia Municipal Association awarded the City of Roswell the City of Excellence Award in 2003.
